DULUTH, Minn.— About 100 Members Cooperative CU account holders have been victimized by a skimming attack on a local POS device, the credit union said.
While the thefts were isolated to the Duluth area, the CU told Northern News Now it still does not know where the skimmer was located.
“Skimmers often will go place a device on a machine. They’re often largely or completely undetectable to the untrained consumer’s eye, and they’ll leave it on there for a bit, then they’ll take it off, they’ll put it somewhere else,” MCCC Communications Manager Lara Wilkinson told Northern News Now.
She said the limited amount of data they have to cross-reference adds to the challenge.
Northern News Now reported that the latest information indicates only MCCU members have been affected. Duluth police are still investigating.
Wilkinson said it’s possible a device was placed on an MCCU ATM, but that is just speculation at this point, Northern News Now said.
“It is possible that they put it on, they take it off,” Wilkinson said. “We check our devices daily.”
One member who had thousands of dollars stolen told Northern News Now they were reimbursed by the credit union Thursday morning.
