South Bay Credit Union Suffers Possible Data Breach

REDONDO BEACH, Calif.—Another credit union is reporting it may have suffered a data breach.

$58-million South Bay Credit Union recently reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it was hit with a cyber-attack on November 18 and January 7, according to Strauss Borrelli PLLC.

The CU stated the breach affected about 7,400 members, and that crooks were able to access member names, Social Security numbers and account information.

The credit union reported it discovered suspicious activity related to one employee’s email account. As a result, SBCU launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, SBCU confirmed that sensitive personal information in the email account may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party during the breach, Strauss Borrelli PLLC said.

As a result, SBCU began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected, Strauss Borrelli PLLC said.

On May 13, 2025, SBCU began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, SBCU is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services, Strauss Borrelli PLLC said.
