Spokane-Area CUs Join In Habitat Project; One Home For CU Employee

SPOKANE, Wash.—Representatives of six Spokane-area credit unions volunteered for Community Day at Habitat for Humanity on Saturday.

Employees from United Health Services Credit Union, PrimeSource Credit Union, Global Credit Union, Horizon Credit Union, STCU, and Numerica Credit Union worked two shifts at the Deer Park Habitat Site where two houses are currently being completed, according to the Northwest CU Association, which first reported the news.

“This event was especially important for the credit union crew as all their volunteer hours were donated to a fellow credit union employee who has recently been approved for a Habitat home,” the NWCUA reported. “More than 30 credit union employees with diverse levels of carpentry skills came together to tile floors, paint the home’s exteriors and install siding.”

Volunteers worked in two, four-hour shifts with some choosing to work all day.

“What started out as a way to collaborate and network among credit unions while giving back to the community ended up meaning so much more knowing that we were giving back to someone within our credit union family,” the Northwest CU Association quoted Wendie Ellis of Numerica Credit Union as saying.  “Being able to put a face to a cause helps you connect better with the event and the community itself.”

While the houses being completed won’t be the one purchased by the credit union co-worker, the hours will go towards her required volunteer hours that must be completed before her house can be started, the NWCUA said, noting that Habitat homes are not given but purchased through a combination of volunteer hours donated and reduced pricing.
