Staples Confirms Possible Data Breach

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.—Staples has become the latest retailer to confirm it may have suffered a data breach.

The company said that it is investigating elevated levels of payment card fraud recently that has been tied to card numbers used by shoppers at its office supply store. The potential breach was first reported by security blogger Brian Krebs. Reportedly, the purchases being investigated were made at non-Staples locations, with the blogger noting that indicates the criminals may have used POS malware to harvest card numbers. Staples has more than 2,000 stores in 26 countries, including 1,800 across the United States and Canada.
