U.S. Economy Adds 227,000 Jobs In November

WASHINGTON—The labor market rebounded in November, according to the latest jobs report.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that U.S. added a seasonally adjusted 227,000 jobs last month. Analysts credited the gains partially to workers sidelined by hurricanes getting back on the job and Boeing employees returning to work.

Both the unemployment rate, at 4.2%, and the number of unemployed people, at 7.1 million, changed little in November, the Bureau reported. Employment trended up in healthcare, leisure and hospitality, government, and social assistance. Retail trade lost jobs.

“These measures are higher than a year earlier, when the jobless rate was 3.7%, and the number of unemployed people was 6.3 million,” the Bureau noted.

The number of long-term unemployed—those jobless for 27 weeks or more—was little changed at 1.7 million in November.

The labor force participation rate, at 62.5%, changed little in November and has remained in a narrow range of 62.5% to 62.7% since December 2023, the Bureau added.
