What Western Sun FCU Is Doing To Keep Money From Being Thrown in Trash

BROKEN ARROW, Okla.–Noting that “thousands of dollars for local schools go directly into the kitchen trash can every month,” Western Sun FCU has placed Box Top for Education collection containers in all of its offices.

The box tops can be collected from items such  as cereal, crescent rolls, and baggies, with the funds then turned over to local schools by the participating companies.

The Cornerstone Credit Union League reported that was Dana Harris, vice president of marketing at WSFCU, who recognized the need. “I felt terrible throwing away 'cash' for schools. I clip the coupons and throw them in a drawer, but since I do not have school-aged children yet, I did nothing with them.”

The Cornerstone league said Harris contacted the Box Top corporate office and asked if it would be a problem. They were overjoyed at the idea.

“The representative said they have never had a business offer the public a means to drop off the tabs for schools," said Harris. "They were tickled pink."

WSFCU will collect the tops at their locations throughout Tulsa, Bixby, Broken Arrow, and Okmulgee. Once $100 in tops have been accumulated, the credit union will turn to social media and let the public nominate the winning school. Those dropping off the pink coupons are welcome to nominate schools at that time, which will be added to the list.

To date, America’s schools have earned more than $719 million from Box Tops for Education.
