PURCHASE, N.Y.—Apple Pay isn’t of much value if a consumer doesn’t know where to use it.
Now MasterCard has unveiled a new app that seeks to address that issue. Consumers with the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus who have relationships with institutions that have signed on to Apple Pay can now download “MasterCard Nearby,” available in the App Store. According to MasterCard, the app allows consumers to find the more than 220,000 merchants in the U.S. that accept contactless payments. In those retailers consumers can place their finger on the Touch ID on the iPhone and enter a passcode to conduct the transaction. MasterCard Nearby also provides information on where MasterCard cardholders can reload prepaid cards, get cash back with their purchases, or use an ATM.
