DES MOINES, Iowa—Holiday shopping numbers show how quickly consumers are shifting their purchasing habits from in-store to online.
E-commerce this past holiday season represented 21% of all holiday sales, noted TMG in a recent webinar.
“That’s up from 15% of all sales in 2015, so a very healthy increase,” said Brian Day, director of digital strategy. “I think what this is also showing is that consumers like shopping from the convenience of their electronic devices and not fighting the holiday crowds.”
Overall, Day believes this buying shift favoring online purchasing will continue.
“Amazon saw more than 70% of its holiday sales from mobile devices,” added Day.
Day added that moves such as those in which Visa partnered with Best Buy during the holidays to offer discounts to users of Visa Checkout indicate what’s ahead.
“This is getting people used to using technology to purchase their items,” said Day.
Of the digital wallets used during the holidays, one study showed that PayPal topped all others, while Walmart Pay came in second.
Day noted, however, the PayPal numbers could have been skewed by the study asking consumers if they used PayPal during the holiday season, which could include online sales.
