America First CU Participates in 'Bite of Reality'

LAS VEGAS–America First Credit Union participated in the Richard Myles Johnson Foundation’s “Bite of Reality” event at Sports Leadership and Management Academy, during which it provided students real world simulation guiding them through a day in the life of an adult. America First was joined by other members of the Southern Nevada Chapter of the Nevada Credit Union League.

Bite of Reality is a hands-on simulation for teens that gives them the opportunity to get a feel for real-world financial scenarios. The students were given a fictional occupation, salary, spouse and family, student loan debt, credit card debt and medical insurance payments, and are then told to visit several stations to “purchase” housing, transportation, food, household necessities, and many other needs. There are even unforeseen expenses and expenditures that are presented because, just as in reality, there are always unpredictable occurrences. Fortunately, the game also includes a credit union to help them finance all needs.

“This interactive activity teaches students how to make financial decisions and give them a better understanding of the challenges of living on a budget,” America First said.

Volunteers from America First included Deborah Murphy, Niel Montemayor and Shannon Dalton. Other local credit unions participating included Clark County Credit Union, InTouch Credit Union, Boulder Dam Credit Union and Silver State Schools Credit Union.
