TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—First Commerce Credit Union is once again raising money for animal welfare organizations across North Florida and South Georgia through its annual Liz Nix Fundraiser for Animal Rescue, an initiative launched in 2022 during National Pet Month.
The credit union said the fundraiser, created in honor of longtime animal advocate Liz Nix, has generated more than $35,000 to support organizations providing services such as spay and neuter programs, vaccinations, microchipping and pet adoption efforts. Liz Nix’s son, Rodney Nix, serves on First Commerce’s Nashville Advisory Council.
“The compassionate work these organizations do makes all of our communities healthier,” CEO Cecilia Homison said in a statement. “Our mission to empower generations and transform communities includes animals, which are so close to our hearts.” Throughout May, the credit union is selling pet-themed merchandise at its financial centers and donating all proceeds to the fundraiser.
First Commerce also said it will continue hosting its “Dogs for Dogs” cookouts featuring hotdog lunches benefiting local rescue organizations, with some events including adoptable animals available for community members to meet. The Leon County Humane Society said approximately 1,000 animals arrive at the shelter each year, many from overcrowded shelters or cases involving neglect or abuse, underscoring the ongoing need for community support.
