LAUREL, Md.– Tower Federal Credit Union hosted its free annual Shred Day event at its branch here to allow members to safely dispose of personal documents and help keep sensitive information out of the hands of fraudsters.
More than 18,000 pounds of paper were shredded during the event, filling two large recycling trucks.
“Shredding documents is a safe way of discarding and destroying sensitive personal documents, and helps guard against fraud and identity theft,” said President and CEO Rick Stafford. “Our annual Shred Day is an opportunity for our members and the community at large to dispose of their documents securely, while having some fun at the same time, and to raise awareness of how we each need to do our part to fight fraud.”
| The annual event featured free on-site paper shredding, complimentary food and drinks, games, prizes, and giveaways. This year’s theme was “Shred, you must” in honor of May 4th, now popularly known as Star Wars Day, which pays tribute to the legendary Star Wars movie series and fandom. New this year, Tower collected donations of non-perishable food items for the Anne Arundel County Food Bank to help fight food insecurity in our communities. In total, six large bins of food were donated to the food bank. “Our members came out in large numbers to dispose of their documents safely, and generously donated food to help those in need in our community,” Stafford said. “We are glad to provide this opportunity for our members to help protect themselves and their families against fraud.” |
To round out the day, representatives from Tower’s Real Estate Lending team, Tower Car Buying Service, and Tower Wealth Management, were also on hand at the event to discuss their services available to Tower members.
