PHOENIX– Arizona Governor Doug Ducey recently visited Metro Tech High School to promote financial literacy for students. During his visit, he stopped at Canyon State Credit Union’s student-run branch and congratulated the teachers and students for Metro Tech’s success.
The governor presented Principal Bryan Reynoso with a $500 donation that will go towards a matching fund when freshmen students open up a savings account at Canyon State Credit Union. In addition to students learning how to manage money, their account can grow to cover expenses such as yearbook purchases, prom tickets and graduation cap and gowns.
After his tour, he met with students and shared his work background. He told them he began as a bus boy in Ohio, emphasizing the concept of “paying yourself first” when you begin to earn an income.
Canyon State Credit Union CEO Jane Dobbs said “we are committed to promoting financial education and helping the students prepare for their future.” She added, “we are also giving students an opportunity to gain work-based learning experience through on-the-job training at the student-run branch.”
The Metro Tech Branch offers financial services for students, faculty and staff members. It is run by student volunteers who are under the supervision of Canyon State management and personnel.
