HILO, Hawaii–HFS Federal Credit Unionis reporting that since 2012 it has now awarded more than 100 scholarships to student members, totaling more than $244,000.
“Previous recipients and applicants have expressed their desire to pursue a college degree so they can return to the Big Island to serve the community and take care of the land and people they grew up with,” the credit union said. “Recipients have gone on to study in fields such as physical therapy, astrophysics, wildlife science, political science and government affairs, material science and engineering, and medical diagnostic sonography.
This year, HFS CU said it has increased the amount of each scholarship to $3,000 each and will be awarding scholarships to 10) Big Island graduating seniors and five current college students.
A total of $45,000 will be awarded to qualified applicants who are the future positive contributors and leaders in the community, it added.
