HRECU Wins Maxwell, Herring Awards

HAMPTON, Va.–Hampton Roads Educators Credit Union (HRECU) has won CUNA’s Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award and the Louise Herring Philosophy-in-Action Member Service Award.

HRECU won second place in the Louise Herring Exceptional Member Service Award for its newly created COVID-19 Loan Payment Relief Program. The program assisted members with their loan payments.

“We were able to both defer payments as well as make loan payments for them, which extended their due dates up to 90 days,” the credit union said. “Members had unexpectedly lost their job, or their income was suddenly reduced due to the COVID-19 shut-down of schools.”

The credit union serves eight school systems on the Peninsula and Middle Peninsula.

In the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award category, HRECU won Honorable Mention for its Shred Day event that combined identity protection through document shredding while collecting food and monetary donations for the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank. More than 3,600 pounds of documents were shredded for recycling and more than 690 pounds of food plus $759 in monetary donations were collected on behalf of the VA Peninsula Foodbank.
