GLENDALE, Calif.– Winners of the Los Angeles Federal Credit Union’s (LAFCU) 2023 Jack C. Mathews College Scholarship competition were honored at a special presentation in the credit union’s boardroom.
Richard Lie, LAFCU president/CEO, awarded $2,000 to each of the six high school or college students pursuing higher education in the Fall of 2023.
Applicants were evaluated on their academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities, community service, and an essay on the following topic: “What is your college major and why did you choose it? How would you apply what you will learn from your field of study to improving society and your community?”
Selected from 67 qualified entries, the winners will attend Stanford, University of California (Irvine, Riverside or Los Angeles), USC, or Utah Tech University. The scholarship is named in honor of the late Jack C. Mathews, who worked for the City of Los Angeles 40 years and served 34 years as a volunteer on the LAFCU credit union board.
