LONG BEACH, Calif.—Employees of LBS Financial Credit Union volunteered their time in the community at two different places.
Eight LBS Financial Credit Union employees from the Bixby Knolls/Long Beach branch volunteered at the Long Beach Senior Center here to greet, register and assist seniors receiving food from the food bank.
In 2013, LBS Financial created a community volunteerism program called LBS CARES. This program encourages employee involvement in local non-profits and schools in the greater Long Beach area. As part of their commitment to give back to the community, LBS Financial said it regularly participates in community outreach events including beach cleanups, assisting at children’s hospitals and stuffing backpacks for students in need. Assisting the food bank at the Senior Center this year was a new venture for LBS Financial that was requested by the employees of the Bixby Knolls branch, the CU reported.
Volunteers from LBS Financial Credit Union were greeted at the Senior Center and introduced to the other regular volunteers. After a brief training session, the doors opened to the seniors who were picking up food. Over the next four hours, the team of employees greeted each guest, checked them in, signed off on their forms and led them to the boxes of food.
Separately, five LBS Financial Credit Union employees volunteered at the Su Casa emergency shelter in Long Beach to clean, prepare and replant the shelter’s garden. Assisting Su Casa this year was a new venture for LBS Financial that was made possible when a board member of the shelter reached out to the credit union seeking assistance.
Volunteers from LBS Financial Credit Union were greeted at the shelter by the shelter’s manager. Over the next two and a half hours, the team of employees weeded, tilled, and raked the garden, removing all the previously overgrown vegetation. New soil was laid and more than 100 potted vegetable plants were planted in the garden, all of which were donated by LBS Financial Credit Union.
A few guests of the shelter came out to see the new garden and thanked the team for their support and assistance. During the day, children played and picked out their favorite plant in the garden while the employees continued to work.
