GLENDALE, Calif.– Los Angeles Federal Credit Union (LAFCU), in partnership with the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region, hosted the “Be a Hero – Donate Blood” Bloodmobile Drive in LAFCU’s Glendale branch parking lot.
The event attracted 30 employees, members and local passers-by, who donated blood for a good cause. As a reward, LAFCU gave each donor two free tickets to the Laugh Factory Comedy club; a voucher for two tickets to an L.A. Galaxy soccer game; and a Wahoo’s Fish taco coupon for a free meal, to name just a few. Nearly 20 blood pints were collected, which will benefit 50 L.A.-area medical patients that need life-saving blood transfusions. The credit union also recently donated $3,000 to the American Red Cross, to help local families with disaster relief and emergency services.
Separately, recipients of the Los Angeles Federal Credit Union’s 2015 Jack C. Mathews College Scholarship competition were named at a special evening reception in their honor. Nine winners, pursuing higher education in the fall, were each awarded $1,000. Held at the credit union's Glendale branch, checks were distributed by John Dea, LAFCU’s President/CEO. Selected from nearly 50 applicants, winners will be attending Boston College; Cal Poly San Luis Obispo; California State University East Bay; Grand Canyon University; University of California Berkeley; University of California Irvine; and University of Nevada Reno. The event was attended by winners’ parents and friends, officials on the Los Angeles Charitable Association (LACA) board, and LAFCU managers.
This year, LAFCU received the highest number of scholarship applications since the inception of the contest in 2010. Applicants were evaluated on their academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities, community service, and an essay with a credit union focus.
