EAST LANSING, Mich.—MSU Federal Credit Union has opened the Money Lab, an interactive youth banking space designed to help children build financial skills through hands-on learning in a fully operational credit union branch.
More than 150 local families, civic leaders and young members attended the grand opening at MSUFCU’s 311 Abbot building, where children participated in activities including money bank painting, button making, a dream wall, a community photo booth and appearances by MSU’s Zeke the Wonderdog.
“We designed this space to provide children a place where they can explore, learn, and build confidence with money in a way that feels fun and approachable,” said April Clobes, president and CEO of MSUFCU. “Through hands-on opportunities to participate in real banking activities, we’re helping make financial education more engaging, meaningful, and memorable.”
The Money Lab functions as a working credit union branch where, with parental guidance, youth members can open specialized savings accounts, make deposits and withdrawals, and complete other banking transactions. The space also features educational attractions including a Financial Table of Elements, a high-density Lite-Brite-style wall, a collaborative LEGO area and a dedicated FUNtivity Zone designed to reinforce financial concepts through play.
“Our goal is to help children feel comfortable asking questions, learning about money, and building confidence along the way,” Clobes said. “The habits we develop early can have a lasting impact on our financial future. When families learn and grow together, it strengthens our entire community.”
The Money Lab is open to the public on select weekdays, with Wednesday afternoons reserved for school and community groups. Participation requires an active MSUFCU youth account, which can be opened on-site.
