HARRISBURG, Penn.–PSECU presented a major donation to the American Red Cross in support of 2017 hurricane relief efforts. The donation of $115,479.24 was comprised of a $2,500 corporate donation from PSECU, as well as a $112,979.24 corporate match based on donations made by the credit union’s members.
Together, the credit union and its members contributed more than $228,000 to 2017 American Red Cross hurricane relief.
“This year’s hurricane season was unlike any we’ve seen before,” said American Red Cross Central PA Region CEO Jeri Sims. “The Red Cross provided more food, relief items, and overnight shelter stays this year than in the past four years combined. None of this would be possible without the incredible generosity of donors like PSECU and its members.”
The check presentation ceremony included remarks from PSECU Board Chair Joseph Sassano and President Greg Smith, as well as Jeri Sims and Michael Murphy, an American Red Cross volunteer who aided in Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.
“At PSECU, we make it a priority to follow the credit union philosophy of 'people helping people,' and with that in mind, we felt strongly that as an organization we needed to take action to help those facing severe challenges as a result of heavy rains, wind, and flooding from this year’s hurricanes,” explained Sassano. “Making financial contributions to charities that are doing work on the scene – like the exemplarily efforts of the American Red Cross – is how we aid in the quick and efficient deployment of funds to help those in need. We also felt that it was important for us to give our members the opportunity to contribute to the cause and help make a difference. Our matching commitment aims to strengthen their individual giving ability.”

Including this donation, PSECU and its members contributed a total of $320,000 to the 2017 hurricane relief efforts of eight organizations.
