RALEIGH, N.C. – State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) members via the SECU Foundation have teamed up with the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency to help Charlotte-Mecklenburg Housing Partnership (The Housing Partnership) address the lack of affordable housing for low-income military veterans and their families.
Tyvola Crossing Phase II, a 20-unit apartment complex, opened its doors to residents in August and recently celebrated a Ribbon-Cutting with the local community. The Housing Partnership received a no-interest construction loan of $600,000 from the SECU Foundation to build the apartments – the first supportive housing development of its kind in Charlotte designated for area veterans in need.
The Housing Partnership was organized in 1988 to expand affordable housing and promote stable neighborhoods for low-and moderate-income families in the city of Charlotte, as well as Mecklenburg County. The goal of Tyvola Crossing Phase II is to provide affordable homes for Charlotte veterans whose incomes range from 30%-50% of the Area Median Income, approximately $14,000 to $23,500 annually. According to the Partnership, nearly half of new Phase II residents were formerly homeless. All apartment units were fully leased in advance of the project’s completion and there is a current waiting list of roughly 40 veterans needing housing.
“These individuals have selflessly served our nation and made sacrifices on our behalf,” said Julie Porter, President of The Housing Partnership. “It is not only an honor but also our duty to ensure veterans have a safe, affordable place to call home. Through our collaboration with the SECU Foundation and numerous other community partners, we are able to provide the necessary resources, services and support these veterans need to achieve independence and long-term success.”
