Spire Helps Homeless; Children's Hospital

MINNEAPOLIS–For the third year, SPIRE employees have volunteered to make sandwiches for the homeless.

Twenty-four employees in two SPIRE locations gathered in June to make 600 sandwiches for the Minneapolis Recreation Development, Inc. (MRD) 363 Days Food Program.  SPIRE’s Mora Team made 150 sandwiches, while the Administration Team made 450 sandwiches.

According to the credit union, MRD is dedicated to serving the homeless community, vulnerable individuals, disadvantaged youth, and their families in the Twin Cities through their Three Programs. Enabled by the generous support of their donor community, from 9 pm to10 am every night Founder Allan Law drives throughout the Twin Cities serving people in urgent need in homeless shelters, and on the street. Making as many as 50 stops a night, he distributes donated sandwiches, basic necessities, and encouragement to the homeless from the back of the MRD minivan.

Separately, SPIRE recently presented a $2,342.55 check to Minnesota Credit Unions for Kids (MnCU4Kids) and Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare in Saint Paul, Minn.  The funds were a result of SPIRE’s in-branch fundraisers, including sales of candy bars, cookbooks and “Archie” truck replicas.  Archie is the name of SPIRE’s unofficial mascot, a 1950s work truck representing Midwestern values.  In-kind donations from SPIRE membership staff and were also included.
