MADISON, Wis.——Summit Credit Union has announced the winner of its 2017 Project Teen Money program, a financial education challenge it created to teach students about finances. Hadley Nellis, a senior at Madison’s Memorial high school, earned the most points this year and will receive a $2,500 continuing education scholarship from Summit.
“Project Teen Money was created as a fun and interactive way to get students thinking about finances and how they can teach others what they learned,” said Summit Credit Union CEO/President Kim Sponem. “Through videos and social media, it’s exciting to watch teens think through smart spending, consistent saving and giving back to the community.”
Now in its fourth year, Project Teen Money sees two students from Madison’s East, La Follette and Memorial high schools develop videos to inspire peers around the importance of financial savvy. For each video, participants get creative and educate fellow students about the financial topic at hand.
This year, the 30- to 90-second videos were published on Summit’s website from February to March with community members, students’ families and classmates voting for their favorite video. Overall points were awarded for timeliness, accuracy, originality and creativity.
In addition to the winner receiving a $2,500 scholarship, all other Project Teen Money participants receive a $500 scholarship from Summit Credit Union.
