UICCU Celebrating 90th Anniversary

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.–University of Illinois Community Credit Union is marking its 90th anniversary.

UICCU was founded as Our Credit Union by E. W. Eubanks and began serving hourly wage earners from a janitor’s room at the U of I Power Plant in October 1932. At the end of that first year, the credit union had 37 members, two borrowers, and $116.97 in assets.

By 1935, the credit union moved off campus to Urbana, expanded its charter to include faculty, and was renamed the University of Illinois Employees Credit Union (UIECU).

In 1998, Illini Student Federal Credit Union merged with UIECU making students eligible for membership at UIECU. UIECU began offering online banking in 2000, enabling members across the country and around the world to easily access and manage their accounts.

In 2015, the credit union adjusted its name to the University of Illinois Community Credit Union to reflect its open field of membership and commitment to serving both campus and community. UICCU continues to evolve to better serve members.

“From a janitor’s closet in 1932 to today, UICCU now has 6 locations across Central Illinois, serving 11 communities with over 56,000 members. The credit union has the #1 local digital banking app and is the #1 local auto lender in Champaign-Urbana,” UICCU said, adding that through its #DoMoreGood initiative, it has given back over $100,000 to local community organizations. The credit union also gives $5,000 annually to high school seniors through its Orange & Blue Scholarship.

“We feel incredibly honored to have served our community for 90 years,” said UICCU President/CEO Chris Harlan. “Looking forward to a future of growth, opportunity, and continuing in our mission to provide lower fees, better rates, and more access to our members.”
