Virginia CUs Meet With All of State's Reps

RICHMOND, Va.–The Virginia Credit Union League is reporting that through Hike The Hill events in Washington and through a series of legislative events across the Commonwealth over the summer, it and its member credit unions met with every member of Virginia’s Congressional delegation in preparation for a busy end-of-year agenda on Capitol Hill.

“Advancing our legislative agenda means maintaining a good working relationship with legislators and policymakers,” said Virginia Credit Union League President/CEO Carrie Hunt. “Our legislative events provide us the opportunity to connect lawmakers and credit unions, showcase the good work of credit unions in serving their members and communities, and build awareness of the issues that matter most to us.”

In Washington, the League and member credit unions met with Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) and key legislative aides for Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA), Rep. Rob Wittman (R-1st), Rep. Jennifer Kiggans (R-2nd), Rep. Bobby Scott (D-3rd), Rep. Jennifer McClellan (D-4th), Rep. Don Beyer (D-8th) and Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-11th).

The issues discussed included:

  • The need to defeat of interchange legislation
  • Preventing a government shutdown
  • Support for legislation that would allow meeting flexibility for the boards of federal credit unions
  • Review of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau regulations’ “potential harm to credit unions and their members.”
