Many Insights, Just 1 Walk

By Denise Hudson

My community, the only native reserve in Alaska, holds a unique charm. Nestled amidst the majestic purple mountains and shimmering coastline of southeast Alaska lies our small island fishing community. Fishing boats gracefully sway in sync with the tides while the melodies of seagulls, ravens, and bald eagles create a chorus in the sky. The scent of the ocean mingles with the aromas of the spring flora.

In our close-knit community, the abundant ocean provides sustenance and livelihood, fostering a strong bond. Summer is almost here.

On an evening walk with my son, the vibrant atmosphere of summer's arrival fills the air. Faces of community members exude joy and anticipation, and greetings are exchanged as we pass by.

It wasn't always like this for me, although I’m a lifelong resident. It was through my work at Tongass Federal Credit Union that I truly got to know my fellow community members and their stories.

One Man’s Desire

I keep walking, reflecting on the impact the credit union has made.

One man's desire to preserve a generational home led us to refinance his primary residence, enabling him to pay off a family member's mortgage and make necessary repairs.

Further along, I’m reminded of the family we assisted by refinancing their vehicle to consolidate debt and save a lot of money each month, as well as interest overall.

A glimpse of a newly constructed home reminds me of the loan we provided as seed money for its construction.

I spot two trucks we financed, this family’s dream cars. The dealership offered them loans, but TFCU’s rates beat them by a long shot.

One Couple’s Livelihood

I keep walking.

Next, I encounter a couple who purchased a fishing boat, which not only supports their family but also provides employment for their crew, ensuring money in all their pockets and food on their tables.

Passing by another home, I recall a couple who sought an ATV but were concerned about affordability. By examining their credit history, their loan officer devised a vehicle refinance plan that allowed them to pay off an unsecured loan, obtain enough cash to buy the ATV outright, and still reduce their overall payments.

One Family’s Business

I keep walking.

This family wanted to expand their business. They had been working out of their home for years and were ready to take the next step. They didn’t know where to begin. We gave them a loan to buy a shop. Now I buy treats there on the weekends.

I keep walking.

A young man on his front porch catches our attention, and my son curiously asks him, “Are you home?” The man, content and grateful, affirms “Yes, I am home. This is home.”  We had provided him with a loan a few months ago for its purchase.

I keep walking.

I see a family with a heavy equipment rental business. Tongass gave them a loan to purchase the equipment. This in turn benefits the whole community. Community members and businesses now have a local option to rent equipment and use it for their own improvements.

One Person’s Realization

I keep walking.

It’s clear to me that Tongass Federal Credit Union has made a profound difference in the lives of our townspeople. I know that the credit union's work has left an enduring mark on our community. It would be difficult to find someone here who hasn't been touched by the support of our credit union.

I keep walking... and I smile.
