On June 26, 1934, in the midst of the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Federal Credit Union Act into law. At first glance, it appeared to be one of many measures designed to help a struggling nation recover. In reality, it created something far more enduring than a government program. It gave Americans ownership over their own financial futures.
