Roving Romanian Gangs Suspected Of ATM Skimming Attacks

MILWAUKEE—Romanian nationals traveling the United States on visas are suspected to be behind the recent ATM skimming attack at Educators CU here.

The CU recently reported that 500 members had their data stolen.

The Kenosha Police Department obtained surveillance video of up to six people responsible for compromising ATMs with skimming devices and hidden cameras on Sept. 6 in Racine and Sept. 12 in Kenosha and Milwaukee, the Kenosha News reported.

In collaboration with an FBI investigation, Kenosha police believe the suspects could be Romanian nationals traveling the United States. It is unknown whether the group is still in the area or even in the country, Kenosha Police Department’s James Kendall told the Kenosha News.

“If these people are not local, which it certainly appears, having their identity being captured on camera is probably not too concerning to them,” said Kendall, a member of the department’s financial crimes unit. “Our goal is to try and identify them and obtain enough information to submit an arrest warrant and possibly have them extradited back. That’s the challenge we’re facing.”

The Kenosha Police Department shared photos of three suspects on its Facebook page.
Video surveillance showed a woman placing a skimming device on the ATM about 8:30 a.m. and the device being removed that afternoon.

UW Credit Union in Madison has also reported issues with card skimmers on ATMs. ATM skimming attacks have been increasing across the country.
